BUILD YOUR BOOK FRAMEWORK

I've Always Wanted To Be A Published Author

My initial thoughts for what later became my first book, were merely emails to friends. I never expected my thoughts would become a published book, let alone a bestselling book. Yet both of these things happened. And when you have a system, the process is much easier than most will try to make you believe.

Fine Art Photographer Wilko van de Kamp wrote a book about travel hacking in 2014 which ended up a number one Amazon bestseller. Following a proven formula, his second book became a number one hot release and Amazon bestseller. What's the secret? Wilko van de Kamp has written and published nearly one million words during the last four booming years of the indie author revolution. Through strategic planning and relentless execution, he's turned his art into a logical, sustainable business that has helped and nurtured thousands of independent authors in 110+ countries around the world. Wilko is an author himself, but what matters most to you is that he's also a serial entrepreneur who understands how to shape the stories he wants to tell into the books that readers can’t wait to buy.

Telling Your Life Story And Writing A Book

Wilko van de Kamp

The Story of Your Life

What’s the story of your life? At what time did you feel happiest? I ask authors in my book-writing program: What’s the most meaningful story you have to tell the world? Your life is made up of a chain of similar stories that somehow link together. Regardless of whether you classify each story as a success or failure, it’s just a story. Your life’s story is a story you own and carry with you everywhere you go. No matter how far you venture away from home, you’ll always bring yourself with you. In your luggage you carry the entire weight of your collection of stories. The weight of a story is made up of the feelings and emotions you’ve added to the story: the fear, anger, sadness, happiness, and every other emotion associated with that story. Until you decide to let those emotions go, you’ll have a heavy backpack to carry. One way of letting go is forgiving yourself. You can choose to let go of the blame and negative emotions associated with the stories of the past. Everything else will take care of itself.

Get the Guide

The Story

We all have experienced or learned something significant in life. We all have a story that, when shared, will be of value to the world. But instead of sharing our story, we compare ourselves to others. This kind of jealousy causes self-disgust. Comparing is the fastest way to feel inferior and lose our self-esteem. We forget about the benefits of what we’ve learned in the process. Comparing creates separation. Everybody struggles his or her own battles but that doesn’t make your story any less important. Do not think anyone else is better or worse than you. Making comparisons can spoil your happiness. In comparing our story to others, we fail to see we’re on our own unique path. Your life is a unique, never to be repeated event. Instead of comparing your story to others, write it down. I help budding authors get past that blank page, and give them a structure to put the story they own down on paper. It’s a powerful process. Something they’ll say will have the power to change somebody’s life. Maybe not the entire story, but a piece of it. That’s the basic concept my book writing course is based on. Just like that, at least a small piece of your story will resonate with what someone else is going through right now, in his or her own way.

Out Of Your Head, And Down On Paper

Everyone has a story to share that not only deserves to be heard, it’s your moral imperative to get it out there. Not sharing your life lessons, keeps that experience locked up in your mind. Nobody can benefit from it there. In not going after what you really want, who are you letting down? Not only are you letting yourself down, but who else? Who in your environment are you not supporting by not going after your dream? As I tell my authors, the goal is not to replicate Shakespeare, as that would be another bad comparison to make. The goal is to get your story out of your head, and down on paper. Only when your story is written down it has the impact to touch somebody else’s life, and help them on their unique path. Chances are it will not be the book in it’s entirety that’ll change someone’s life, it’ll be that one paragraph, or even one sentence, that’ll give someone a new viewpoint, make them think, and ultimately help them along on their journey. By not sharing your story, not writing your book, you’ll never write that one sentence that has a significant, beneficial impact on somebody else.

Your Book: Time To Write It Down

Is it time to get started on your story, and write it down? Whether you decide to publish your life story in a book, or just talk more about what truly matters at the water cooler at work, you have a choice in what to share. Sharing your story helps you letting go those painful memories from the past that will block your growth. The past isn’t fixed. Telling your story will help you reframe the limiting beliefs you’ve been holding on to in your life. You’re no longer the person you used to be. You can focus on what parts of the story you share, and how. The story is about the core of your life, the things you build your life around that matter. It might just be that one sentence, but it’ll make a difference to someone.

Write Your Book Before Later Becomes Never

Wilko van de Kamp

Why Would You Write A Book?

I believe that you already know why you would write a write book. If you’ve read this far, something inside you tells you whether you should write a book or not. Maybe this is not for you. Maybe you’ll never write your book. That’s fine too. It’s your life, your dream. All I ask is that if you have that desire somewhere deep down, don’t ignore it. If writing a book is that unachieved bucket list item I invite you to get started today. If you don’t start today then it’ll never happen. A goal without an action plan is just a dream. If you keep postponing and delaying working through your bucket list items then it’ll never happen. We’re all on borrowed time on this planet. The only moment we know that we will truly have is now. If there’s something (anything) you truly wanted to do why not do it today. If that’s true for you on some level I would love to help you and have you on board in my program.

It’s a dream of many but unfortunately not enough people pursue their passions. Even the ones that do try often don’t finish the book project they started. Almost every author or writer on Twitter today was complaining about writers block. They’re all collectively stuck on a project they don’t know how to finish.

Need Some Help Getting Started On Your Book?

Let's put together the 7 step framework for your book.

Writers Block

The good news? Writers block does not exist. All you need is a system. Good books aren’t written, they’re structured in a way that make them a success. I teach my system in my book writing program. I also show how you can find a publishing home for your book. Self-publishing is not all that it’s believed to be. It’s a nice way of saying you’ll end up with a basement or garage full of books. Not what I intended to do with my space. Besides, selling books is hard work. Shipping them is even more expensive and requires heavy lifting. Not what I’m interested in either. There is a much better way.

Three Bestsellers. And Counting

Without being all that interested in selling the book myself, I wrote three bestsellers. And counting. I turned my books into additional income streams. A lot of people have asked me how I did that, and my answer is my life-changing author course. I wrapped all my experience with the publishing industry in step-by-step model. My course helps anyone who wants to become an author write their book. Today I’m working with more than 4,000 people in over 110 countries around the world that participate in one or more of my classes. They learn from everything that I share and implement the benefits into their lives every day. I’m super excited and grateful to have so many people benefit from the content that I’ve created. Seeing authors reap the rewards of their work in turn is rewarding for me. Thank you everyone!

I'm Not Your Guru

Contrary to what the many gurus out there proclaim, my program is not the only way to write a book. You don’t need to work with me, but there is the opportunity if you want to. If you want to write a book there’s a thousand and one ways to get that done. I did it myself. I figured out everything myself. I figured out how to write it, how to find a publisher and eventually how to sell my book. The catch? It took me a lot more time than the week it’ll take when you follow my program. The experience I gained doing everything myself is nicely wrapped up in a package called Write a Book in a Week. There’s a huge benefit for you to have a look at that content for yourself. See if it could help you, and then decide. While you’re not required to work with me to write your book, I would love to have you on board of this program. See if it could benefit you. If you have that desire to write your book – go for it.

The First Step

It’s about taking that first step to get you to where you want to be in life. When I first started writing some of my travel thoughts down I never thought that that would turn into a real book. I was just sharing some thoughts with a friend about how I book and organize my travel. Those scribbles turned into a real paperback book. My publisher came around and said they’d turn those thoughts into a book. I never thought that would happen. I still remember getting that first copy of my book delivered. That moment put a huge “completed” check mark beside my bucket list item of becoming a published author. Just like you, I had always wanted to write a book. I never knew how it would happen. When that book ultimately became a number one bestseller you can imagine my surprise. Moreover, I was super excited that so many people have benefited from the travel ideas that I share in that book.

Do You Have An Idea For A Paperback Book?

Wilko van de Kamp

Have An Idea For A Book?

I have never met anyone who hasn’t, at one point or another, considered the idea of writing a book. Have you? You probably have at least a faint idea of what you could write about. They say everyone has a book (deep) inside of them. If you’ve never allowed that book idea to come forward, maybe go for a long walk, forget everything and let your subconscious get to work. And then the fun begins.

Everyone has a book inside of them – but it doesn’t do any good until you pry it out. (Jodi Picoult)

Need Some Help Getting Started On Your Book?

Let's put together the 7 step framework for your book.

Think

Once you have a book idea, just let it mull over in your mind. Write down any and all thoughts you might have in regards to your book idea. A simple list will do. I always have a notebook with me so I can quickly make a note of ideas that cross my mind. For me, that means keeping several notepads around the house, so that even if I wake in the middle of the night I can record the idea – and go back to sleep!

Set Up An Ideas Bank

When you start creating a collection of notes and ideas, group them together. As you read newspapers and magazines, tear out any useful information and add it to the appropriate section. You can use writing as a process to get organized, or even to get closure or answers to any questions you may have yourself. As you browse web sites and see useful pieces of information, print them out and store them in your folder in the relevant place. Don’t judge what you collect; if you think it may be valuable, just collect it and file it.

Produce An Outline

Having written some notes, collected some background material and chatted to people you should now be able to come up with an outline for your book. In my course I teach exactly how to structure a book for success, but here’s the summary: First, start with a broad outline of the main themes you will cover. These will make up your chapters. Secondly, take each theme and subdivide it into the particular points you want to make or things you want to discuss in your book.

Just... Write

You don’t have to start at the beginning. Choose any of the small parts of any chapter and write as much as you can about it. Don’t worry about the grammar, the spelling or your literary style at this stage. Just write whatever comes to mind about the specific subject you have chosen. Once you’ve done that, select another part of your detailed outline and write about that. Let’s say you have 10 chapters each with five sections. That’s 50 sections you need to write. For a 30,000 word paperback of around 120 pages, that means you need around 600 words per section. By taking it a section at a time it is more manageable. I can show you my system that’ll teach anyone to write an entire manuscript in one week – less than 20 hours to be precise.

Use Writing As A Process To Get Organized

Wilko van de Kamp

How I Use Writing As A Process To Get Organized

People often think that if you’ve written a book about something, you must have all the answers. I sure used to look up to my mentors who had written a book on a topic I wanted to learn more about. But now that I’ve written a few books myself, I realized writing a book is simply a matter of harvesting and structuring information in a certain way. Writing is becoming aware of the fact that you already possess the majority of the information needed to complete the entire book – even if you don’t have all the answers just yet.

The real step is to simply to organize what you know into a list of usable ideas. That list will help you identify and organize the information you need (and already have) into building blocks of information to begin shaping your book. As I teach my students in my Write a Book in a Week program, good books aren’t written, they’re structured in a certain way that makes the book a success. By analyzing your life experiences and stories into building blocks, you will be ready to write the entire book much faster.

Here’s a few pointers to help you get started.

Need Some Help Getting Started On Your Book?

Let's put together the 7 step framework for your book.

You Know More Than You Think

You have already achieved a certain level of success in your field, career or even hobby. You may be an active consultant, business owner, photographer, speaker, or writer. Whatever you have done so far, you have been constantly learning and observing. On your path to success through failures, successes and opportunities, you have already accumulated most of the information you need to complete your book. Through the process of continually doing what you do, you have gained a wealth of knowledge and information – and your book will help you share that valuable information with the world.

The challenge is that your knowledge is unorganized. Once you learn the structure for organizing your ideas, your ability to create your book (or even multiple books) will quickly begin to take shape. I can teach you the structure as part of my book writing class.

Divide And Conquer

Break your wealth of knowledge into chunks of information. The beginning point is to begin separate your files, speeches, articles into general topics. For example, I have bodies of information for my inspirational writing and a whole other body or topic for business writing. The various categories of topics on my blog Living by Experience help me gather and structure a lot of the information I use for other writing and teaching projects. Read my post here on why you might want to start a blog yourself.

You’ll notice that as you organize the information you already possess, you will also uncover some areas where your knowledge is bit weak. Once you identify those areas, you can look for the answers you need and literally fill in the gaps.

Create A Framework

Once you have an inventory of all your ideas, start building a framework to organize them. For a short book, simply creating a list of every idea related to your book’s topic is a great starting point. After your ideas have been categorized, you can spot patterns of what will help you to write a book on a topic you are most passionate about. In the Planning module of my book writing program, we’ll do various interactive exercises that will help you uncover your (hidden) passions in life and discover your purpose for writing a book that will help others.

Once the framework is in place, it’s literally a matter of filling in the gaps to write your entire book – which can be done in well under a single week when you follow my proven method.

The Three Stages Of Writing A Book

Wilko van de Kamp

Becoming A Bestselling Author

It is said everyone has a book inside of them. Have you ever thought of writing your book? It’s one thing to write a book, it’s an entirely different thing to write one that’s a saleable, viable, marketable product. Ensuring the success of a book is something even the biggest publishers have never been able to guarantee. Mitigating circumstances, flash trends, and world events will all affect buyer preferences. That said, there are still ways to leverage the sales-factor in your favour.

Paying close attention to the three different stages of writing a book and becoming an author will help you incorporate these aspects into your book and help you uncover marketing opportunities that will help make your book a success.

Need Some Help Getting Started On Your Book?

Let's put together the 7 step framework for your book.

Plan And Write Your Book

Connect with the story inside of you and discover your purpose for writing a book. Why would you want to write a book and what can you write about? Are there any “holes” out there your book could fill? What do you know about trends related to your book/topic/audience?

Publish Your Book

Once you have a system, writing the book is easy – now the fun begins. How and where to publish your words? Will you actually be able to hold your own printed book in your hands? Have you read all ten “competing” books in your category? If you haven’t, you should. You’ll want to know everything you can about what’s out there and how it’s being perceived in the marketplace and the publishers servicing it. It’s never a problem having a similar topic – when I came out with my travel hacking book The Freedom Project I knew there were many other books out there on travel. I just angled my book differently – and it became a bestseller.

Sell Your Book

Being a published author can open many doors for you that remained closed before. I’ve been interviewed on radio and television, and landed several high paying jobs simply because I had written a book. Contrary to popular belief, writing a book definitely can increase your income. I’ve seen people double and triple their income after publishing their book!

How To Get Started On Writing Your Book

Wilko van de Kamp

Are You The One (Or Two)?

Many people dream of writing their own book. The sad fact is that for every 500 people who want to write a book, there might be only 1 or 2 who actually do it. Somehow, we get it stuck in our minds that we “can never do that” and that writing “should be left to the professionals”. Nothing could be further from the truth! I am 100% convinced that anyone … even YOU, can write a book successfully if they just understand a couple of basic principles. In this article, I’m going to cover the exact steps that you can use right away to take the first steps towards your dream of writing that book.

Need Some Help Getting Started On Your Book?

Let's put together the 7 step framework for your book.

Collect

Collect what? Collect everything. If you are writing nonfiction you will collect information about your topic. You might collect magazine clippings, newspaper articles, along with various notes and quotes from any variety of sources. You might also collect things like sights, sounds (record audio), and smell (take notes about how things smell). If you’re writing a novel the things you collect will be differ a little from this. Instead you’ll collect thoughts, ideas, character ideas, and scene ideas, along with any information (similar to the above) that involves research for your novel. If you’re writing a crime novel you might collect information about the criminal justice system. If you’re writing a romance you might collect notes and ideas from relationship books, dating websites, and your own relationships and experience. The important thing to do is to collect, and to do nothing but collect at this phase. Don’t analyze stuff; don’t try to figure out the order of things too early. Just collect!

Categorize

In this step, you are free to unleash your inner control freak. Organize, categorize, analyze, criticize, hypothesize… I think you get the point. The whole purpose of this stage is to take what you collected in the previous stage and organize it into an order that makes sense. Read articles and books, sift your notes down to the finest details, and sort it all out into related areas that make sense together. Once you have the related areas grouped together, put those “categories” into an order from first to last. If you have a ton of notes and other collected stuff, don’t stress about trying to tackle the whole pile at once. Just take part of it, and work on ONLY that part until you have it organized and sorted. Then grab some more notes and do the same thing with those. You can add to either if you need to later. Once you have everything analyzed, described, and sorted you can then move on to the third step in the process.

Communicate

This is the fun part! This is simply the act of actually communicating everything that you’ve put together from the first two steps. In other words, write it down! The sorted, organized collection that you have from steps one and two is now your library of things you can write about. All you have to do is start to use everything you’ve collected in your writing project. If you have your notes broken in to sub-categories, treat each one as a book in itself. In my online book writing course I teach you how to further outline and structure all the information you already have, and go from book idea, to print book, and potentially even best-selling book. Are you ready to get started?

The First Step To Becoming An Author

One of the questions I get a lot as a travel photographer is “how did you do it?”: people are curious how I manage to travel all the time. They think I’m either a millionaire, or have some sort of secret. I decided to write my travel secrets down, initially on my blog which eventually turned into a book about travel hacking. When that book turned into a number one bestseller, guess what question I got again? Right: “How did you do it?“. Let's start at the beginning: What's the first step to becoming an author?

You’d think it would be “write”, but it’s not. In speaking to other authors and from what I know of my own journey to becoming an author, the biggest obstacle for new authors is that they don’t think of themselves as authors. They have trouble developing the belief that they are authors. When you haven’t developed that belief, that conviction, it becomes a source of sabotage – you don’t value your work enough to give it the time and the space it needs. How do you come to think of yourself as an author? Here are a few tips:

Need Some Help Getting Started On Your Book?

Let's put together the 7 step framework for your book.

What Happens When You Write

Everyone has something to say and some even have a strong desire to say it. You may not know how you’re going to say it or in what form (poetry, novel, essay, etc.) but you know something is there. Pick up your pencil or pen, or sit down at your computer and write something. Whatever you write, just make sure your heart is in it. It doesn’t have to be perfect, it doesn’t have to be neat. It does have to be expressive.

Next, as scary as it may be, you have to show this writing to someone. It can be a friend, it can be a family member. Then, pay attention to what happens. Did the person reading your work cry, laugh or maybe even get angry? If so, you did that! You invoked an emotion, and you have an impact with your writing. It’s worth at least something. Now you have to keep going!

A teenager recently wrote to me concerned her mother will read the fiction story she’s writing and might get upset because mom could think it’s a story about things the teenager actually did. Even if mom gets upset about a fictitious story, that means the young lady’s work is believable and effective. That kind of feedback is hard to ignore. It’s a powerful motivation to keep going. I once had an author say to me, “I don’t know if my stuff is any good. I just know that when people read it, they cry.” You can’t get a message any clearer than that kind of emotional response. You just have to listen to it, and keep writing.

Cultivate Silence and Experiment

If you’re having trouble thinking about what it is you have to say, it may help you to spend some time each day in silence. Some authors pray, others meditate. The idea is to get used to clearing your mind and tuning in to your inner voice. You’ll also be more aware of those little pieces of possibility floating around in your head that can later grow into big ideas.

It’s okay if you don’t know what you want to write about. It may take a long time journaling for you to see what keeps coming up for you. And it may take longer to find the form that fits you best. I went from journaling to articles before I settled on my current non-fiction travel theme. It took me years to do that. It doesn’t mean I won’t do anything else in future, but what I’m doing right now just fits with what I’m passionate about. I encourage you to experiment until you find the form that suits your writing best.

You Are An Author

As you develop your belief that you’re an author (and build the experience), it’s helpful to set up reminders that will bring you back to that mindset that you need to be in to write. When you sit down to write it’s easy to get distracted and starting thinking about doing laundry or what’s for dinner. You’ll want to have something either on your desk or on the wall in front of you that reminds you to get back to work and that you are a writer. A writing coach or being part of a writing course or program will also help keep you on track.

It might be your list of values that remind you that writing is a part of who you are. It may be simple words such as CREATE or INSPIRE. Isabel Allende, who writes historical novels will sit in her office with photos around her, old photos of people who essentially represent her characters so she’s surrounded by them. That puts her back into the mindset of her book because she is sitting in their world; these people are all around her.

What world do you need to be in? The journey you take to get there will be one of many you’ll take as a writer. I hope these ideas will help you take those first steps. What you write –and where you go from here –is entirely up to you.

Telling Your Life Story And Writing A Book

Your life is made up of a chain of similar stories that somehow link together. Regardless of whether you classify each story as a success or failure, it’s just a story. Your life’s story is a story you own and carry with you everywhere you go.

Ready To Make Your Book Dream A Reality?

There are a lot of budding authors out there. You might be one of them. But there aren’t enough who are truly committed to the dream of making their book a reality.

Write Your Book Before Later Becomes Never

If writing a book is that unachieved bucket list item I invite you to get started today. If you don’t start today then it’ll never happen. A goal without an action plan is just a dream. If you keep postponing and delaying working through your bucket list items then it’ll never happen.

Do You Have An Idea For A Paperback Book?

I have never met anyone who hasn’t, at one point or another, considered the idea of writing a book. Have you? You probably have at least a faint idea of what you could write about. They say everyone has a book (deep) inside of them.

Use Writing As A Process To Get Organized

Writing a book is simply a matter of harvesting and structuring information in a certain way. Writing is becoming aware of the fact that you already possess the majority of the information needed to complete the entire book – even if you don’t have all the answers just yet.

The Three Stages Of Writing A Book

It’s one thing to write a book, it’s an entirely different thing to write one that’s a saleable, viable, marketable product. Ensuring the success of a book is something even the biggest publishers have never been able to guarantee.

How To Get Started On Writing Your Book

For every 500 people who want to write a book, there might be only 1 or 2 who actually do it. Somehow, we get it stuck in our minds that we “can never do that” and that writing “should be left to the professionals”. Nothing could be further from the truth!

Your First Steps To Becoming An Author

The biggest obstacle for new authors is that they don’t think of themselves as authors. They have trouble developing the belief that they are authors. Let's overcome that limiting belief.

Frequent Author Questions

Whether you’re a existing author looking to refresh your book marketing skills, learn new trends, and find fresh strategic inspiration, or you’re a new author with just a burning desire to "one day" write a book—you’re right where you should be. I'd love to work with you. But if you have some questions first, check this page for the answer. Or just get in touch to see how our program works. Getting started with us is free of charge.

Why Did You Make This Program?

After my book came out, everybody asked me how I managed to write a book, how I found a publishing home for it, and then (eventually) how I managed to turn my book into a bestseller. The entire process made me fall in love with writing books and seeing them published, and I want to share those benefits with as many budding authors as possible. I believe everyone has a book inside of them - and it's time to bring that book out and put it down on paper.

Will Writing a Book Mean More Work?

Yes. Writing a book is a lot of work, and after it's published there's even more work: being a published author can open doors for you that you never thought were possible. The key is to have a system. This course is a learning experience designed for you to leave with tangible outcomes and a proven structure to follow on the rest of your author journey.

Do I Have To Finish My Book In One Single Week?

Not necessarily. Once you know the system to write a book in a week you can choose to apply that system to any timeline you're comfortable with, whether it's a week, a month, a year, or a decade. It's up to you. The key is to have a system that will break the book writing and publishing process down into manageable pieces. Using a step-by-step proven approach you can implement it at any pace you're comfortable with. The key is to get started.

What About The Quality Of A Book Written In A Week?

See for yourself: my Freedom Project book series is written using the approach I teach. The focus in this program is not on speed or creating content quickly, it's about following a proven system that will help you get your book idea out of your head and down on paper. You can write your entire manuscript in well under one week, and then take appropriate time for the editing process to finetune your writing. As Ernest Hemingway said: "Write drunk, edit sober."

Is This Based On Self-Publishing?

In the course we'll discuss a number of publishing options and the pros and cons for each. Self-publishing is one of the options available to you, but ending up with a basement or garage full of books was never my goal: there are much better options out there and we'll tackle them all.

Can't I Simply Do This On My Own?

Sure. Information is free and abundant. You're not required to work with me, but the proven best practice approach I teach in this course will save you both time and money versus figuring it all out on your own. Most books published (including those published by traditional publishers) will fail and never sell more than a few copies. This course is designed to increase your chances of success and avoid the pile of "flopped" books.

We promise the best experiential author learning experience you've ever had. I'm not yet sure which category you're in... but let's find that out.
